'The Secret Garden'

Rooted in medieval and Renaissance religious art—such as depictions of the Virgin Mary—the walled or locked garden symbolises purity, sanctuary, and the boundary separating the sacred interior from the profane world. In modern and contemporary work, the secret garden is often treated not as a physical place but as an inner realm—a space that mirrors emotional growth, hidden trauma, healing, or repressed desire. Painters often use the theme to explore humanity's futile or hopeful attempts to domesticate nature, contrasting manicured pathways with untamed, overgrown foliage.
