‘Absurdism’ (or Existentialism by any other name) is never an easy place to be. The brain searches for certainty, but none exists. Frustration can often be the outcome. In some ways, the French authors convey their message by exploring some of the most uncomfortable aspects of the human condition. Perhaps it’s easier to make their point. Here is my interpretation of one of the key early moments in Albert Camus’s ‘The Outsider’. The setting shows a sunlit interior of an Algerian house, where shadows flicker across the tiled floor, hinting at the complexities of human experience. A doorway leads to the coffin of the protagonist’s mother, while the open window allows light to flood in, symbolising both hope and the absurdity of life. In a disturbing moment, the narrative reveals a detached and emotionally indifferent attitude that is shocking.
