"Tess of the d'Urbervilles" is a tragic novel by Thomas Hardy, published in 1891, that follows the life of Tess Durbeyfield, a young woman from a poor rural family who discovers she is descended from the wealthy d'Urberville family. Her life takes a turn when she is seduced and impregnated by Alec d'Urberville, and later, after marrying Angel Clare, her past comes back to haunt her, leading to a devastating series of events. The novel explores themes of social class, morality, sexuality, and the impact of societal expectations on women, particularly within the context of Victorian England.
