I wanted to portray a Spitfire returning low from a Channel sweep in 1940. Flying over a restless sea, the White Cliffs of Dover cutting a stark line beneath shafts of angled sunlight, I built the scene with geometric layers to emphasise motion and the cliffs’ sculpted presence, so the flight feels both urgent and deliberately composed.
