'Catch 22' - book cover art

Engaging with one of my favourite novels, I’ve attempted to depict a scene set in Italy during World War II, focusing on the complex character of Yossarian, a bombardier struggling with the absurdities of war. In this illustration, Yossarian embodies a profound sense of melancholy as he reflects on the perilous missions he is assigned. Above, an aircraft looms, symbolising the constant threat and chaos of combat. I hope the contrasting colours evoke a sense of tension and introspection, reflecting Yossarian’s battle against the bureaucratic madness of Catch-22. Of course, it’s all bonkers and a lesson to us all.
