I created this image after spending picnic time next to this 17th/18th-century packhorse crossing over Haigh Clough. The single-span stone arch, just 4'6" wide, was built for mule and pony trains that moved wool between Huddersfield and Rochdale — a small piece of working history set against the rolling Pennine hills. The local name “Eastergate” likely comes from “Esther’s Gate,” after Esther Schofield who ran the old Pack Horse Inn nearby.
