Clifford's Tower is special as the most significant surviving part of York Castle, a major medieval fortress, and for its brutal historical association with the 1190 pogrom against York's Jewish community. The tower, built by William the Conqueror, has a complex history as a stronghold, prison, and royal mint, before a 1684 explosion destroyed its roof, leading to a 2022 transformation with a new roof platform and internal walkways that tell its story.
