The Gokstad Viking ship
The Gokstad Viking ship, discovered in 1880 in Sandefjord, Norway, is a significant Viking-era discovery. Dating back to the 9th century, it is a clinker-built vessel made primarily of oak, designed for warfare and trade. The largest preserved Viking ship in Norway, it measures 23.8 meters long and 5.1 meters wide. It features 16 tapered planks per side, iron rivets, and a quarter rudder for steering. Found in a royal burial mound, it was suitable for raiding, trading, and long-distance voyages. The ship is now displayed at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo.
