The English Electric Lightning was a British supersonic fighter aircraft. The Lightning had an exceptional rate of climb, ceiling, and speed; pilots have described flying it as "being saddled to a skyrocket" It was designed as an interceptor during the Cold War era to defend against potential threats, such as Soviet bombers. The Lightning was capable of speeds exceeding Mach 2 and had a unique design feature: two vertically stacked Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines within its fuselage
