Ophelia

I think I’ve been haunted by the idea of the drowning of Ophelia since finding JE Millais’s painting in a book of my father’s when I was very young. This is my take - more an exploration of how water distorts form and colours.

Ophelia's tragic drowning in Shakespeare's Hamlet is a haunting moment, often attributed to her grief and madness. She loses her father Polonius and struggles with Hamlet's erratic behavior. In Act IV, Queen Gertrude describes her falling into the water, seemingly unaware of the danger. The drowning is ambiguous, but her fragile state suggests she no longer has the will or awareness to save herself. Her death is symbolic of innocence destroyed by corruption and cruelty, making it one of the most poignant moments in Shakespearean tragedy.
