Icarus Falling

Inspired by Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s painting ‘The Fall of Icarus’. The subject of Icarus in the painting is barely noticeable and appears incidental to the everyday tasks the people are involved in. The ‘extraordinary’ can happen without our registering it. In my illustration, the farmer might or might not see Icarus falling out of the sky. Navigating his tractor in a straight line is his main concern.

The story of Icarus is a captivating tale from Greek mythology that explores themes of ambition, hubris, and the dangers of overreaching. The Greek myth revolves around Icarus, son of inventor Daedalus, who escapes from King Minos' imprisonment on Crete. Daedalus creates wings from feathers and wax, warning Icarus not to fly near the sun or the sea. Despite his father's warnings, Icarus soared, eventually falling into the Icarian Sea.
