Low flying in a DH Mosquito
Mosquito bombers often flew at low altitudes for several strategic reasons. Their missions frequently involved precision strikes on specific targets, such as enemy infrastructure or high-value locations. Flying low allowed them to evade radar detection and avoid anti-aircraft defences, which were more effective at higher altitudes. Additionally, low-level flight enabled them to navigate visually and accurately place their bombs.
The Mosquito's speed and agility made it well-suited for these daring low-altitude operations, and its wooden construction helped reduce its radar signature. These tactics were particularly effective in surprise raids, such as Operation Jericho, where Mosquitos bombed Amiens Prison to free Resistance fighters.
